Build your repertoire by dabbling in oil! Artists have been using oil paint for several centuries and oil paints remain one of the most popular artists’ mediums today. Oil paint dries several times slower than its acrylic counterpart, and some people prefer its depth of colour and ‘feel’ on the canvas. Because it’s slow to dry, it’s a great choice that allows you to take your time as you work. We have an unbeatable range of premium oil paints for sale. Find your favourite colours and start planning your next masterpiece!
How do you start an oil painting? You can pick up a brush and start painting with oil paint immediately. There are no special techniques to the application, although there are some best practices. First, understand that oil paint and water do not mix. You should use turpentine to thin out your paint, and to clean your brushes and palette knifes. Second, you should learn the “slow over fast" rule, as it is best to use quick-drying thin layers of paint under the thicker layers that will dry more slowly on top. Otherwise you may end up with a cracked surface!
What is the best medium to use with oil paints? Oil paints are best used on canvas. You can use a lightweight or heavy canvas. You can also use either heavy watercolour, drawing or mixed media paper; look for a paper with a weight of 300 gsm or more. We sell a variety of papers suitable for oil paint—be sure to check out our range!
Can you mix oil paint and acrylic? It isn’t a good idea to mix oil paint and acrylic together on a palette because they do not blend. Additionally, if you paint acrylic over oil, the acrylic is likely to crack. However, you can paint over acrylic with oil. For example, you could prime your canvas or sketch out your composition in acrylic and finish the rest of your art in oil.
Oil paint can be worked for several hours on your palette, making it a good choice for slower pieces. We have a fantastic range of oil painting supplies to get you started, including oil paint sets, paint brushes and mixed media paper. Whether you are an artist or buying for someone else, you will appreciate the quality of our products. Find your favourites in our shop, and be inspired to try this treasured medium!
