Rock Painting

Rock painting is the oldest form of art. Humans are known to have painted on rock since prehistoric times. It’s fantastic fun and with the right supplies, rock painting is something both children and adults can enjoy! We recommend using acrylic paint because it is opaque and long-lasting. It’s also non-toxic and safe for the environment. We have all the rock painting supplies you need to get started, including outdoor acrylic paint that’s formulated to stand the test of time when exposed to the elements. Check out our latest supplies and enjoy the best rock painting experience with Arteza!

What kind of paint do you use on rocks? You can use standard acrylic paint on your rocks or try outdoor acrylic paint for a longer-lasting finish. The difference is that outdoor paint is self-sealing to create a waterproof barrier. Normal acrylic paint is not, so you will need to use a sealer if you want it to last outdoors. It’s easier to just use outdoor acrylic paint from the outset.

How do you prepare rocks for painting? If you are using rocks from nature, smooth rocks are best. You should wash your rocks in soapy water until they are clean. You do not need to prime the rock; however, you might achieve a better finish with a coat of acrylic gesso. You can also buy painting stones, which are pre-washed and ready to go.

Will acrylic paint wash off my rocks? Normal acrylic paint washes off rock over time unless it is sealed. Outdoor acrylic paint will not wash off because it has a waterproof coating. An alternative to using a paintbrush is to use paint markers for a more temporary finish. We have liquid chalk markers, as well as acrylic paint markers, that will dry with a temporary finish.
