Quilting Rulers

Quilting rulers are an essential tool in any quilting and patchwork kit. A ruler that isn’t easy to use will only slow you down and frustrate you. With the right quilting ruler, you can take precise measurements and make equally precise cuts for a perfect final product. The difference between an everyday ruler and a quilting ruler is in its design; ours feature a precise cutting grid and angles with low seam allowances, bringing increased accuracy to your work. This patented ruler design is exclusive to Arteza, so browse on over to judge for yourself!

What quilting rulers do I need? Some quilters use several rulers of different sizes, while others choose the couple that are big enough to do it all. We prefer the latter option, which reduces the number of tools in our quilting bag and just makes life easier! There are several common ruler sizes:

  • 6 x 46 cm
  • 16.5 x 61 cm
  • 15 x 30.5 cm
  • 22 x 61 cm
  • 13 x 13 cm
  • 15 x 15 cm
  • 32 x 32 cm

As a baseline, you’ll benefit from having at least one long and one square ruler in your quilting kit.

How thick are quilting rulers? Quilting rulers can be made to any thickness, though the standard is 4.5 mm or 6 mm. Sewing machines with a sewing foot require a 6 mm-thick ruler to prevent unwanted climbing under the sewing foot.

What’s the proper way to use a quilting ruler? Quilting rulers feature a grid and diagonal lines; you use the grid to make precise cuts, and the diagonal lines will help with unusual ones, such as those at 45 and 65 degrees. Acrylic quilting rulers are the best option because they’re transparent, allowing you to see the fabric you are working on. It’s a good idea to get acquainted with your ruler beforehand, so you’ll have an idea of what the grids and lines mean before making any cuts.

No matter your skill level, a quilting ruler is fundamental to good quilting. At Arteza, our square and long quilting rulers have a patented design. The double-coloured grid lines make it easy to take measurements on both light and dark fabrics, while the ambidextrous angle system lets you make precise cuts from the left and right.
