You can also get heat transfer vinyl, which is great on fabrics. This is why vinyl is often considered an important part of an artist’s quilting supplies.

Which surfaces are good for vinyl? Self-adhesive vinyl is compatible with most solid surfaces. It can adhere to plastic, metal, wood, composites and laminates. The only limitation is the condition of the substrate, as the surface needs to be clean to adhere properly. If you want to use vinyl on fabrics, you should use heat transfer vinyl, which melts onto fabric with an iron. If you need to cut vinyl, you can use a craft blade and a self-healing cutting mat.

What is transfer paper used for? Transfer paper is used to transfer vinyl to a substrate. For example, if you were to cut out a shape in vinyl, you could transfer the vinyl to the transfer paper. You would then transfer the vinyl to the substrate using the transfer paper as a carrier. Transfer paper makes things easier because you don’t have to hold the vinyl when transferring it, only the paper.

Vinyl is a versatile and fun medium to work with. You can use sheets to wrap objects in a new colour or cut out shapes to do the same. Adhesive vinyl is easy to work with and since it’s self-adhesive, you don’t need any messy glue. If you are new to craft vinyl, we recommend starting with sheets. Vinyl sheets are pre-cut and will be big enough for most projects. We have a fantastic selection of normal vinyl and heat transfer vinyl sheets available. Go metallic, go colourful or stick to black and white— Arteza has vinyl available in all colours to suit your project!
